MEMORY SYSTEM RESEMBLES BEADS ON A STRING

Our memories of actual experiences are like "beads on a string ",say scientists after they discovered how the brain organises sequence of memories.

(४)Men and women do not have different brains, claims neuroscientist

Neuroscientist Prof Gina Rippon claims male and female brains only differ because of the relentless ‘drip, drip, drip’ of gender stereotyping

The idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, with male and female brains wired differently, is a myth which has no basis in science, a professor has claimed.

Neuroscientist Prof Gina Rippon, of Aston University, Birmingham, says gender differences emerge only through environmental factors and are not innate.
Recent studies have suggested that female brains are more suited to social skills, memory and multi-tasking, while men are better at perception and co-ordinated movement.
However, speaking on International Women’s Day, Prof Rippon will claim that any differences in brain circuitry only come about through the ‘drip, drip, drip’ of gender stereotyping.
“The bottom line is that saying there are differences in male and female brains is just not true. There is pretty compelling evidence that any differences are tiny and are the result of environment not biology,” said Prof Rippon.
"You can’t pick up a brain and say ‘that’s a girls brain, or that’s a boys brain’ in the same way you can with the skeleton. They look the same.”
Prof Rippon points to earlier studies that showed the brains of London black cab drivers physically changed after they had acquired The Knowledge – an encyclopaedic recall of the capital’s streets.
She believes differences in male and female brains are due to similar cultural stimuli. A women’s brain may therefore become ‘wired’ for multi-tasking simply because society expects that of her and so she uses that part of her brain more often. The brain adapts in the same way as a muscle gets larger with extra use.
“What often isn’t picked up on is how plastic and permeable the brain is. It is changing throughout out lifetime
“The world is full of stereotypical attitudes and unconscious bias. It is full of the drip, drip, drip of the gendered environment.”
Prof Rippon believes that gender differences appear early in western societies and are based on traditional stereotypes of how boys and girls should behave and which toys they should play with.
Segregating the way children play – giving dolls to girls and cars to boys – could be changing how their brains develop, she claims.
“I think gender differences in toys is a bad thing. A lot of people say it is trivial. They say girls like to be princesses. But these things are pervasive in the developing brain and stifle potential.
“Often boys toys are much more training based whereas girls toys are more nurturing. It’s sending out an early message about what is expected in a child’s future.”

Earlier this year Consumer Affairs minister Jenny Willott said that women were being forced into professions that paid less well because of gender stereotyping when they are children.
Girls were often guided into low paying occupations like nursing because of the types of toys they were given to play with, she claimed. This led to an over-representation of women among nurses – and of men among engineers and physicists
Debenhams has stopped gender specific labelling of toys – Mark and Spencer was now its own brand of toys more “gender neutral”.
Megan Perryman, who co-founded Let Toys Be Toys, a campaigning group against gender stereotyping said: "In our experience, children enjoy a range of toys and it's important they are encouraged to play with anything that interests them.
“Telling boys not to play at being caring, or girls to avoid toys involving science or physical activity can only serve to limit their potential.
“Children learn these 'rules' of how to be a boy or girl at a very young age, via marketing, media and those around them. It can be upsetting to the child if their interests do not conform and can prevent them from being the people they really are."
Prof Rippon’s will be speaking at ScienceGrrls's ‘Fighting the Neurotrash’ at Southbank Centre’s WOW – Women of the World Festival on Saturday.

Scientists have discovered a new class of antibiotics to fight deadly bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other drug-resistant bacteria that threaten public health.

The new class, called oxadiazoles , was discovered by University of Notre Dame researchers led by Mayland Chang and Shahriar Mobashery in silico (by computer ) screening and has shown promise in the treatment of MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureusis ) in mouse models.

MRSA is a bacterium that has developed resistance to penicillin and certain other groups of antibiotics . Researchers who screened 1.2 million compounds found that the oxadiazole inhibits a penicillin-binding protein, PBP2a, and the biosynthesis of the cell wall that enables MRSA to resist other drugs.

The oxadiazoles are also effective when taken orally. This is an important feature as there is only one marketed antibiotic for MRSA that can be taken orally, researchers said.

MRSA has become a global public-health problem since the 1960s because of its resistance to antibiotics. Only three drugs currently are effective treatments, and resistance to each of those drugs already exists. The researchers have been seeking a solution to MRSA for years. "As we now understand the mechanisms, we can devise strategies to develop compounds against MRSA," said Chang.

(६)Now, a device to turn water into wine

WASHINGTON: A new machine that can turn water into wine in just three days by simply adding a few other ingredients has been developed.

The Miracle Machine takes only a couple of dollars to make wine that would normally cost at least $20, its makers claim. The fermentation chamber in the machine turns water, grape concentrate , yeast and a finishing powder into wine.

The chamber uses sensors, transducers, heaters and pumps to provide an environment for the primary and secondary fermentation stages. An accompanying app, linked to the Miracle Machine via Bluetooth, tracks the wine's progress. It can be used to select the perfect wine for your taste, telling you which ingredients to purchase in order to make the wine of your choice. The finishing powder has flavours that will allow your wine to taste as if it has been aging for months.

Plant-based sweetener with zero calorie catches on

It can be hard to keep up with all the bad news on sugar — or the smoking of our time as it's rapidly becoming known. It has become this generation's ticking time bomb, leaving a trail of diabetes and obesity in its wake.

Last week, the World Health Organization added its voice to the fray, warning that sugar should make up just 5% of our daily calorie intake, half of what it had previously advised . But help for the sweettoothed — which, given that manufacturers spike even cereals with sugar, means practically everyone — is at hand.

Food science analysts report that salvation lies in a naturally sourced substance called stevia, which has no calories , no carbohydrates, and does not raise blood sugar levels . It comes from a plant that has been used as a sweetener for centuries in Paraguay and Brazil, and has been sold in Japan for years, yet the West has been slow to wake up to its virtues . Stevia-based products have only been approved as food additives since 2008 in the US, and since 2011 in the EU.

A report by Mintel and Leatherhead Food Research predicted that the value of such products, would soar to $275m by 2017 from $110m in 2013.

One drawback is that despite being between 250 and 300 times sweeter than sugar, some people find it has a slightly bitter aftertaste. But companies are getting round this by blending it with — sugar. Tropicana recently launched a juice made with 50% stevia and 50% sugar, halving the number of calories per serving. And Coca-Cola is poised to launch its steviasweetened alternative to Coke across the world. It already sells a version of Sprite that includes stevia.

Laura Jones, an analyst at Mintel, said: "Stevia is definitely the one to watch. It's still early in the innovation process , but it will become more appealing as new variants are released."
