80% moms glue kids to TV before feeding them: Survey

Indian mothers have hit upon a novel-if unhealthy-way to counter their children's food-related tantrums: Just turn on the television.

A survey among roughly 7,000 mothers across the four cities of Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Bangalore showed that 80% of them fed their children in front of the TV.

While the mothers felt their children ate faster and didn't throw tantrums about the contents on their plate while watching TV, doctors and nutritionists warned the habit could lead to obesity. "Eating in front of the TV is a well-established cause for obesity in the West," said Dr Ramen Goel who heads the Metabolic Surgery Association of India that commissioned the survey.

The problem with idiot-box-assisted eating is that the child tends to overeat, thereby gaining weight. Nutritionist Shilpa Joshi said children who are force-fed-either in front of the TV or not-fail to develop an "auto signal" for hunger. "They never realize when they are actually hungry," she said.

The survey was conducted by the Early Childhood Association across its own schools and some private and government balwadis in the four cities, between September and December 2013. "When we discussed the survey results with mothers, they were stunned to realize how wrong they were," said Swati Popat-Vats of the Early Childhood Association.

Vats said only 23% of the mothers said their children ate all vegetables while nearly half confessed their kids only ate potatoes and lady's fingers. Around 45% of the mothers said they didn't give fruits to children and some felt tetrapack fruit juices were a substitute for fruits.

"Nine out of 10 patients tell me they cannot cook without potatoes. As potato was historically the only concentrated form of calories known to Indians, it found its way in every preparation," said Joshi. But Indians are changing-urban Indians are sedentary, bound to their desk or sofas who don't need such calorie-dense foods.

In fact, obesity is emerging as a major public health problem in India as it's a leading cause for diabetes and heart diseases. The problem is already apparent among children: Around 2.5 million children in India are either overweight or obese.

"Between 30% and 35% of our schoolchildren in urban areas are overweight. Eating only potatoes and bhindis or eating in front of the TV will only worsen the epidemic," said Dr Goel, who commissioned the survey after an Assocham survey showed that 85% of parents with children aged under five served fast food around seven times a month.

He said the number of children opting for bariatric surgery-a method to cut down the size of the stomach so that the person eats less and becomes fitter-has been rising in India. "They may need bariatric surgery on an individual level, but it cannot be an option for all children," added Dr Goel.

Experts said as a child is dependent on parents for fo-od selection, it's important they inculcate healthy eating habits themselves. "A child should eat what the rest of the family does. The minute child-specific dishes are prepared, it degenerates to potatoes," said Joshi. "Cut down on maida and white rice, add fibre by insisting at least one snack should be a fruit or one bhaji at every meal."
