  2. Doctors use peanuts to cure children of potentially fatal allergy
Paris — Doctors said Thursday they could treat peanut allergy by feeding children the very thing their bodies reject, so building tolerance that could save a life in case of accidential ingestion.
Small doses of peanut powder taken over several months seemed to induce tolerance in children with the potentially deadly allergy, a research team wrote Wednesday in The Lancet medical journal.

After six months of treatment, dubbed oral immunotherapy or OIT, 84-91 percent of the children in a trial could safely tolerate daily doses of 800 mg (0.03 ounces) of peanut powder -- the equivalent of about five peanuts, wrote the team.
This was 25 times the amount they could tolerate before the therapy, and much larger than any accidental dose is likely to ever be.
"The treatment allowed children with all severities of peanut allergy to eat large quantities of peanuts, well above the levels found in contaminated snacks and meals, freeing them and their parents from the fear of a potentially life threatening allergic reaction," said study leader Andrew Clark from Cambridge University Hospitals.
"The families involved in this study say that it has changed their lives dramatically."
The trial involved 99 allergic children aged seven to sixteen.
One in five of the kids receiving OIT reported "adverse events" -- mostly mild itching of the mouth, the authors said.
They stressed that people should not try the treatment at home as more research was needed.
Peanut allergy affects about one in fifty children and is the most common cause of fatal food allergy reactions, said a press statement. About 10 million people around the world are allergic to peanuts.

Symptoms vary from mild to severe, from swollen lips or shortness of breath to anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal.
While "exceptionally promising", the method remains experimental, Matthew Greenhawt from the University of Michigan Food Allergy Center wrote in a comment also carried by The Lancet.
"It is unknown if OIT can produce lasting tolerance," he wrote.

Have scientists found the conscience?

Scientists appear to have located the conscience

The part of the brain that makeshumans superior to all known animals, and which also functions as the voice from within — popularly called conscience — has finally been found.

Scientists from the Oxford University have for the first time identified an area of the human brain that appears unlike anything in the brains of other primates. It is part of the Ventrolateral Frontal Cortex, a region of the brain known for over 150 years for being involved in many of the highest aspects of cognition and language.

To look into which part of this region actually controls our superior decision making , scientists carried out MRI scans in both humans and monkeys. They found one area of the cortex that had no equivalent in the macaque monkeys — an area called the lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex.

"We have established an area in human frontal cortex — the brain area known to be intimately involved in the most advanced planning and decision-making processes — that we think of as being especially human. It does not seem to have an equivalent in the monkey. This area has also been identified with multi-tasking ," says author Franz-Xaver Neubert of Oxford University.

Scientists also believe that lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex is the loud (inner ) voice that pricks whenever we are inclined towards evil or blunder in our lives. Oxford scientists say this is the region that tells us when we go wrong and whether we have been well advised to do something better.

MRI imaging of 25 adult volunteers was used to identify key components in the cortex area of the human brain, and how these components were connected up with other brain areas.

The results were then compared to equivalent MRI data from 25 macaque monkeys.

Have scientists found the conscience? Region of brain

discovered that makes you feel bad about poor choices

  • Region is called the lateral frontal pole and located at the front of the brain

  • It is used to reflect on decisions, as well as ponder the meaning of life

  • The research could help scientists understand psychological conditions

  • A part of the brain that helps stop humans from making bad

  • decisions and acts as our conscience has been discovered

  • by scientists

  • The small ball of neural tissue, named the lateral frontal is vital for pondering the ‘what ifs’ of life, researchers said.

  • Other parts of the brain keep tabs on how well decisions are working, but this new region thinks over what we might have done instead.

Scientists at Oxford University made the discovery after scanning human brains in two different ways

Scans from 25 men and women showed that this part of the brain is made up of a dozen smaller sections. The scans were then compared with monkey brains.

The scans showed that there is nothing like it in the brain of the macaque monkey, despite it being one of our closest relatives.

Eleven of the 12 sections in the network were similar – they they were found in both humans and monkeys and connected up to other, more distant, brain areas in similar ways.

But one, the lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex, was missing in the macaques, despite it being one of our closest relatives.
Differences in the human and monkey brain have been found before, but this is special because it is the first time such a clear change has been spotted in the region behind flexible thought.

Oxford University scientist Matthew Rushworth said: ‘We’ve identified an area of the brain that appears to be uniquely human.’
The lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex is found at the very front of the brain – with one just above each eyebrow.
In some people, it is the size of a Brussels sprout; in others, it is as big as a tangerine.
Previous research has shown it is particularly important in multi-tasking. For instance, if we decide to do one thing, it will continue to evaluate the other option – or think about what might have been.
While this might seem odd, it is good preparation for a later change of mind.
The tiny brain region helps us learn from watching others’ mistakes, speeding up the acquisition of new skills.
The study, published in the journal Neuron also revealed the people to have stronger wiring to brain regions involved in hearing – perhaps helping explain our ability to speak.
Such work could help shed light on psychiatric conditions including ADHD and obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as improve understanding of how speech is damaged by a stroke.

  • What is caffeine use disorder ?

"CUP OF WOES :Some people are unable to reduce caffeine consumption even if they have another condition that may be impacted by it .These symptoms combined are a condition called 'Caffeine Use Disorder'

    The Caffeine Crutch

Overworked and sleep-deprived, more people are using caffeine as an energy crutch than ever before, experts say. That’s not all bad: In fact, 250 milligrams of caffeine per day—that’s two to three cups of joe—wakes up the brain, improves concentration, relieves stress, and may also help you live longer. But if intake is turning into addiction, you may notice side effects , including dehydration, trouble sleeping, anxiety, an upset stomach, and even problems during prenancy.

    Caffeine Can Be Hidden

If you’re trying to cut back, you’ve probably already reduced the amount of coffee, tea, and sodas that you consume. But the sneaky stimulant can pop up in unexpected places. Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) doesn’t require manufacturers to list caffeine content on nutrition labels, it’s often hard to tell whether a product contains the stimulant, and how much. These  sources of caffeine—some hidden, some just plain weird—could be giving you the jitters.

    Decaf  coffee

The name implies that this cup of java delivers all the taste you love without the caffeine, but don’t be fooled. In 2007, Consumer Reports tested 36 cups of decaffeinated coffee from six coffee standbys, including Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. Compared to the caffeine found in a regular cup (generally around 100 milligrams), the decaf samples had less, but some packed in over 20.

    Non-cola sodas

Colas and other sodas like Mountain Dew are well-known caffeinated culprits, but others play less obvious roles in your daily caffeine intake. Some brands of root beer, such as Barq’s, contain caffeine. Both the regular and diet flavors have 23 milligrams per 12-ounce can, just 12 milligrams less than a can of Coke. Sunkist’s orange soda has a surprising 41 milligrams of caffeine, and A&W Cream Soda has about 25 milligrams.

    Chocolate

Caffeine is found naturally in cocoa beans, so any chocolate has a little bit of the stimulant. Candy bars generally have less than 10 milligrams, but the darker the chocolate, the higher the caffeine content. Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Bar has a whopping 31 milligrams, almost as much as a can of Coke! Some chocolate is fortified with additional caffeine for an energy boost—take the limited edition Snickers Charge, which has 60 milligrams of caffeine, about the same as a cup of tea.

    Ice Cream

If there’s coffee or chocolate in your ice cream, expect the scoop to deliver a small jolt. Many popular brands have coffee flavors that contain between 30 and 45 milligrams of caffeine per half cup, which is about the same as a can of Coke. Chocolate ice cream has much less, however; a half cup of Breyer’s All Natural Chocolate ice cream has only 3 milligrams, according to a Consumer Reports analysis.

    Weight loss pills

Caffeine really doesn’t do much to shrink your waistline, yet diet pill manufacturers have overloaded their pills with the stimulant. For example, taking 1,223 milligrams in a daily dose of Zantrex-3 is like having 12 cups of coffee, according to a 2005 analysis conducted by ConsumerLab.com.

    Pain relievers

A little caffeine can curb headaches, but in large quantities it can actually cause them, some research suggests. Many pain relievers incorporate caffeine to ease the pain, but if you take more than the label suggests, you could be taking more than you need. Two Excedrin Migraine tablets have 130 milligrams of caffeine, the same as a Starbucks Light Frappuccino with espresso— so stick with the two-tablets-per-24-hours label instructions.

    Energy water '

Riding the coattails of the fortified water trend is a new concoction from various bottling companies: caffeinated water. Some packaging, like that of the former Fruit2O Energy, which boasted as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, displays caffeine content prominently. But others, specifically those flavored with guarana, a Brazilian plant that is a natural source of caffeine, are less obvious; for example, Propel’s limited edition Invigorating flavor has 50 milligrams of caffeine, as does VitaminWater’s Energy flavor.

    Alcoholic energy drinks

The practice of mixing caffeinated beverages and alcohol – popular among college-age drinkers – also has gained traction among adolescents, according to a new study co-authored by BU School ofPublic Health researchers.

The study – led by BUSPH student Kalé Z. Kponee and community health sciences professor Michael Siegel, and published in the journal Addictive Behaviors – indicates that mixing caffeine and alcohol is more common among underage drinkers and starts at a much earlier age that previously thought.

The research team, which includes David H. Jernigan from the Johns

Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, found that young people who consumed energy drinks mixed with alcohol were several times more likely to binge drink, get in fights and sustain alcohol-related injuries than those who did not.

Adolescents who consumed alcohol mixed with energy drinks had almost twice the average drinking days per month as those who did not mix caffeine with alcohol. They also consumed almost triple the total number of drinks per month compared to non-caffeine users.

Mixing alcohol and caffeine can mask some of the feelings of intoxication, Siegel said.
“It’s particularly dangerous because the caffeine hides the cues that young people normally receive from alcohol to indicate intoxication, leading them to drink more than they intend,” he explained. “Our findings suggest that this is leading to severe adverse consequences.”
The researchers found that teens who started drinking between ages 11 and 13 were more likely to report recently drinking caffeinated alcoholic beverages than those who started later.

Despite the number of claims about the benefits of coffee ,the truth is :

COFFEE ADDICTION IS HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH

If you’re like over half the adult population in the United States, you drink coffee every day. By the end of the year, you will have consumed over ten pounds of the stuff.

What’s disturbing is that a tremendous number of people, including you, are made to believe that coffee is good for your health. Like a drug, coffee gets you addicted to drinking it every time. You enjoy its great taste and turn to coffee to get your energy boost for the day.

In fact, drinking coffee has become so addictive that some people can’t get through the day without downing several cups in the morning, noon and night. It has even evolved into a social drink, with consumers spending generously on sugar-loaded concoctions from Starbucks and other cafes.

Drinking Coffee Daily Can Compound the Toxic Substances in Your Body that Increase Your Risk of Insomnia, Stroke and Heart Disease

If your coffee beans are grown outside this country, it’s very likely that they have been exposed to PESTICIDES that contribute to several cancers and Parkinson’s disease. Coffee is also known to disrupt absorption of vitamins and minerals that are essential for your body to function properly. The caffeine doesn’t have any nutritional value either, and has been linked to diabetes. In pregnant women, it increases the risk of having a miscarriage or a low birth weight baby. Other health hazards include:

    • Heart disease
    • High cholesterol levels
    • Fluid loss in your body
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis
    • Stroke
    • Damaged blood vessels
    • Insomnia
    • Anxiety symptoms
    • Depleted Calcium and Iron levels in women

    MODERATION IS THE KEY

Researchers have narrowed down a shortlist of foods they believe are crucial for helping the body ward off diabetes – and the good news is that red wine is included.

Researchers from the University of East Anglia and King's College London found that foods high in flavanoids and anthocyanins increase our insulin resistance and help regulate blood glucose.

Flavanoids are antioxidants found in various plant foods, such as parsley, thyme and celery, as well as dark chocolate and tea. They've been found to help protect against heart disease and some cancers, but now it appears they help with diabetes too.
However, it was anthocyanins, which are found in red and blue-coloured fruits and vegetables and red wine, which the researchers believed were the best weapon.
They studied almost 2000 healthy women who had completed questionnaires that highlighted their total flavanoid intake.
Blood samples were also taken and tested for glucose regulation and insulin resistance.

"This is one of the first large-scale human studies to look at how these powerful bioactive compounds might reduce the risk of diabetes," lead author Professor Aedin Cassidy from UEA said in a media release.
"Laboratory studies have shown these types of foods might modulate blood glucose regulation. But until now little has been known about how habitual intakes might affect insulin resistance, blood glucose regulation and inflammation in humans."
Professor Cassidy said it immediately became clear that those who consumed lots of anthocyanins and flavones had lower insulin resistance.
"High insulin resistance is associated with Type 2 diabetes, so what we are seeing is that people who eat foods rich in these two compounds, such as berries, herbs, red grapes, wine, are less likely to develop the disease," she said.
"We also found that those who ate the most anthocyanins were least likely to suffer chronic inflammation, which is associated with many of today's most pressing health concerns including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. And those who consumed the most flavone compounds had improved levels of a protein adiponectin, which helps regulate a number of metabolic processes including glucose levels."
Professor Cassidy said the next step was to find out how much we need to consume.
"What we don't yet know is exactly how much of these compounds are necessary to potentially reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes," she said.
King's College's Professor Tim Spector, who was involved in the study, said further studies are needed to confirm the findings.
"This is an exciting finding that shows that some components of foods that we consider unhealthy like chocolate or wine may contain some beneficial substances," he said.
"There are many reasons including genetics why people prefer certain foods so we should be cautious until we test them properly in randomised trials and in people developing early diabetes."
Diabetes UK said the best thing people can do to reduce their risk of diabetes is maintain a healthy diet with a range of fruit and vegetables.

"But for red wine and chocolate, which also contain them, our advice is to limit your consumption of these and this advice would be very unlikely to change even if further research did demonstrate that flavonoids reduce Type 2 diabetes risk," Dr Alasdair Rankin, director of research for Diabetes UK told the Daily Mail.
"This is because any health benefit from the flavonoids would be dramatically outweighed by the calories in the chocolate and the alcohol in the wine."
The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition.
